Armenian Feminist Blog spoke to Leslie Diaz, an amazing woman who does her PhD in Armenia about immigration. Here is what she told us about a very cool project: The ScREenery!
ArmFem: What is The ScREenery?
Leslie Diaz: THE SCreENERY is an grassroots community project set, but not limited to Armenia, in which volunteers hold free movie screenings and flash art exhibitions in order to promote art in less conventional spaces.
How was the idea to create The ScREenery born?
In 2011 a group of about 6 friends decided to use some space that was outside of the city center where most interesting cultural activities take place. The understanding was that activities in the center tend to be more expensive and that it could be less accessible to the locals than to foreigners who live in the city with bigger budgets. So this group decided to bring art to the neighborhood.
Who are the volunteers, members, etc.?
The members are always changing. There are continuously at least 3-6 active members at any time. In Yerevan there are 3 of the founders of the group, two Hayastancis and one person from America.
Do you get any financial support?
The overhead is very low after the initial donations of the technical equipment (projector, screen, portable computers). Volunteers are constantly donating tshirts, paint, popcorn, oil, space, and their time - these are the things that are regularly used throughout each season.

What is the aim of this project?
The goal was and is to make art accessible to people who would not necessarily go to the movie theaters or art galleries. The idea was to place art in everyday places like on the side of a house rather than in a conventional institution. By doing this the events could also reach those who would not normally put the energy into finding it. Gorilla art tactics.
Who are the people interested or involved in The ScREenery's activities/events?
Interestingly, it depends on the venue or place that we have an event in. Though it's easy to get around Yerevan, most people stick to their regular places, whether that is a cafe, bar, park, or organization. So, we find ourselves moving to new locations for most events to reach more people in order to diversify our crowd.

How long has it been?
These events started in May 2011.
What did The ScREenery gave to you?
It exposed me to art that I would not have necessarily sought out on my own. That is why I stay involved because I think it's important for people to have exposure to things that they do not normally consider. How do you know to look for a movie that you have never heard of? How do you google search an artist whose name you do not know?
What would you like to say to the readers?
You can have your own event in the name of THE SCreENERY as long as it is FREE AND PUBLIC. Use our equipment! Current volunteers are always waiting for new people to come with fun movies and ideas. Thanks for being interested
